I remember when I was a little kid and my friends and I would ask each other "what do you want to be when you grow up?" Some would say: a doctor, nurse, bus driver, wrestler, mechanic, teacher, a thief (lol) and much more. I always wanted to be a "children's doctor" (pediatrician). Think way back (lol) when you were a young lad or a young "cute, adorable" little girl, living in the farm, the city, or the "hood". Do you remember those conversations that use to brighten up the day and we would jump up and down confessing that we will become who we wanted to become? However, how often did we ask ourselves "why" did we want to become who we wanted to become?
Living in N.Y.C, I've been taught many lessons that I believe that only N.Y.C can teach you (not trying to start any beef). One thing I've learned from N.Y, in terms of the environment, that when you waste time, YOU WASTE TIME.
For example, When you walk the streets of Manhattan, everybody is about their business and surely they do not have time to stop and say "hello" ("what a rude place" ~ Anonymous [Texas folks]). There is a reason for certain individuals walking the streets of the city. They are heading towards a particular destination. That destination must be reach before the day is over. If they do not meet that destination before the day is over, then it would be a mission incomplete. Perhaps, if I can speak on behalf of some, the reason why individuals with a nice suit or dress are walking in haste with their head focus on that destination because there is a place where they can go and say "mission complete."
Why do you want to be who you desire to be? Even with some of those individuals who walk up and down the streets of Manhattan should ask themselves the same question. I could walk down the streets of Manhattan with a nice suit, long coat, fresh hair cut, have my head focus on anything, walk fast, refuse to say hello and destined to go no where. Anybody can do it!
Why do you want to be a doctor?
Why do you want to be a lawyer?
Why do you want to be a teacher?
Why do you want to be a business owner?
Why do you want to be a police officer?
Why do you want to be the president of the United States?
Why do you want to be a preacher?
There are a lot of "why's" that needs to be answered in our lives. Life is too short to waste time in anything. James says "... what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" James 4:14 ~ New King James.
"There's has to be a reason for everything. If there isn't a reason for anything, then there isn't a reason to live." ~ S.J Brice
Notice: When there isn't a "why" in the center of your future endeavors, no matter, if you become a successful doctor, preacher or anything else, the mission is incomplete. Why? Because there isn't any "why" (purpose, goal) in your mission. You are fighting everyday of living for nothing.
I believe God called me for something else rather then a pediatrician. I believe that God called me to be a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We all have dreams and goals we want to accomplish. The question which we all fail to ask is: Why do I want to be who I desire to be?
Example: Why do I want to be a minister:
I want to bring Glory to God as I use my gifts in Ministering to God's people. I believe that God has blessed me to be a good source of help to those who is (was) in dying need of help. I want to use these gifts and be as relevant as I possibly can in the lives of People. I enjoy being a blessing to the Lives of people and Glorifying God.
Notice the "King of the Jungle (the picture above)." The king often remains in that position. One may ask: why? From observation, the king is overseeing his family and watching for predators. At the end of the day, when his family is safe from predators, he will go back to his place of comfort and be at peace because "mission complete."
My question to you is: Who do you want to be and why do you want to be who you want to be?
Proverbs 13:16 "Wise people think before they act; fools don't - and even brag about their foolishness" ~ New Living Translation.

steven you hit all the right points and everything you made me re-evaluate what i want to do with my life-Prince JRC3
As I read alot what you wrote I realized that you did something that I fault at myself. I want to start out by saying its a blessing that you have found your purpose in life because alot of people live without knowing it. I also want to say that the black population is known for not accomplishing anything, which is why a hand full of us strive to do so much in life. Your associates degree is only the beginning to how successful your going to be, you made it through those two years and recieved an award, thats should be a great feeling. Although it isnt what you exactly wanted, dont give up, what your aiming for will come soon. Dont rush for the Lord is good to those who wait, I had to tell myself that so many times. Its like Im so eager and want so much more of life.Thank you for the encouragement by sharing your experience, im sure it has helped many!!!
Thanks a lot, old buddy.
OC that is completely right- except for the sligh comment about the TX person, maybe they were right. its cool to be about missions but u should also enjoy smiling at people and enjoy life, too. i had to drop that by.
I said I wanted to be a pediatrician as well - and I do still want to work with children and help them but in a different way. Thats why i want to be a marriage/ family therapist. i even wanted to be a social worker but thats a little too involved and emotional for me. its really dangerous too- everything these days are but that wasnt exactly the route either. I do believe i am called to be a leader in what ever i do- iam still thoroughly studying my purpose for being what i want to be. I firmly believe that God has called me to be a counselor even when i dont want to talk to people they continue to long for my help and advice and even prayers and encouragement. And when its all said and done i actually enjoy it! Why not do something that I love and that is very dear to my heart. I see where the future lies as of now for our little brothers and sisters and their viewpoint on how a family should be. i cant allow another generation to suffer and destruct so there is going to take someone who cares and who knows the truth and stands firm on that truth. i also want to own my own business and even maybe a youth outreach program something beneficial to the future of the children especially in the church.
Pray for me all who read this and i am praying for you all too.pray that i have a mind of purpose and not pettiness. thanks i love you
star, it is wonderful to have those ambitions, goals and endeavours, however, my question is "why"? Why do you want to be a marriage and family therapist?
o sorry i thought i stated it - I want to be a Family/ Marriage counselor for the fact that i have experience in this field in the way that marriages DO AFFECT the children and the EFFECTS can be prevented. i love talking to people and having encouraging conversations- its all about preventing another generation from destructing when all they need is someone guiding them to the word of God or someone who is trained in the field. I first want to be a children's counslor because until i am married i really wont be properly trained in that field- thats my long term goal. I can be that listening ear to that troubled child. I want to help and guide children into paths that are beneficial to their futures - i really want to target young women because they are the backbones to the future.I understand and i want them to as well. Its my passion and I want to do it because i want to be there for the children and families not just to get paid but also because I see our churches and that could make all the difference. I can go into detail ( lol- like i havent said too much) later!
thats wonderful, i hope i see your "mission complete"

Alot of people waste time and their talent that God has given them and end up with nothing, By readin this Blog It makes me want to be the best that I can be with God in my life.
ok ok! thanks for this blog!.... thompsom told me to come here...
Your Welcome. Thanks for coming through. Enjoy your journey through the page
Even after our discussion on this topic I still sometimes forget to ask myself "why", because it so easy to get caught up in aspirations, goals,long-term dreams that it's easy to forget to stop and think. You forget to stop and say "hey why am i doing this...you know...what good am I doing for this world by wanting to do this, or go here or go there. It's crazy because you can apply this question to any type of scenario because just yesterday I was eating barbecue brisket, potato salad, drinking a big red,and then turned right around and ate and ICE CREAM SANDWICH!! I put the icecream down and wondered to myself: why am i eating all of this fattening artery clogging garbage, how is this contributing to my goal to be healthier and more fit...lol...as funny as it sounds what was my purpose for eating it? I think we as christians and just people in general do things just for the heck of it, just because it's there in sight. It doesn't benefit to the betterment of the world or fulfill a purpose...it just helps the day go by a little faster..and at the end of the day there's lots of work to be done the next(lord willing we're blessed to see another)day because nothing purposeful was accomplished in the day that was wasted. So who do i desire to be, and why do i desire to be that person?...That's a question that I'm still asking myself, but what i do know is that whatever my desired role may be I want to be a person that many young women(such as myself and younger)look up to, I want to be the epitome of what a virtuous woman is,I want to be a God fearing woman that doesn't have to ask anyone where a certain a scripture in the bible is...but as for your question...let's wait and see what the future holds.
